VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol.  In short, it means that your voice is turned into a clear digitial signal and sent over the internet, much like e-mail and web traffic.  Unlike analog phone lines which can have static and other sound quality issues, with VoIP you get a pure digital connection right from your phone.  It uses your existing internet connection and computer cabling, no need for new custom wiring.
