Frequently Asked Questions > System features and how-to > My caller ID name is showing incorrect information
Caller ID name service is unregulated and each phone company implements it in their own way. The name is not sent by us during the call; it is stored in a central database. When you make a call, the recipient's phone company looks up the name and displays it. In many cases, that company doesn't do a proper lookup because this costs them money. Instead they work from old records and only update them a couple of times a year. Cox is one of the companies that does this. If you are calling a Cox phone number, your name may be incorrect for up to six months because they've chosen to not do a proper lookup for each call.
